Forest Garden Education
In support of traditional Maya farmers, Exploring Solutions Past has co-developed a number of projects with communities surrounding the El Pilar area, with the intention of promoting and preserving the traditional practices of forest gardening.
As the world encourages industrialization and moves away from traditional ways of life, we are losing proven methods of sustainability from the past. We must continue our efforts to educate the youth and community on the importance of sustainable farming and preserving Maya heritage.
In collaboration with the MesoAmerican Research Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Exploring Solutions Past is chronicling Maya forest gardens to better understand and document their sustainable alternative to resource-diminishing industrial farming methods. In addition, partnership with the MesoAmerican Research Center has resulted in several published works on Maya forest gardening. Click here for examples of Dr. Ford’s published papers.
